Hannibal Christmas Campaign Kicks Off

The Hannibal Salvation Army kicked off its Christmas season with the annual Tree of Lights Christmas Kick-off event last night at the Hannibal Nutrition Center.

The 2017 Christmas campaign goal has been set at $100,000 Major Andy Miller, area commander, was please to announce that $10,500 of this goal has already been received.

Each year, community leaders step up to serve as honorary chairs of the Christmas campaign, further extending the outreach and effectiveness of the efforts of The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army announced Susan and Jay Johnson as its 2017 Christmas Campaign Chairs.

The Salvation Army provides a variety of programs and services to assist families in need in the counties of Marion, Ralls, Lewis, Monroe, and Shelby. Following are a few examples of ways The Salvation Army has given a hand up to our neighbors in need.

The Salvation Army Emergency Shelter & Family Services provided the following assistance during 2016:
9,274 individual instances of assistance were given
4,330 people were served by the daily bread line
1,139 food boxes were distributed
49 families received utility assistance
98 families received help with clothing
16 families were provided rent assistance
Last Christmas:
611 families received Christmas food boxes
1,073 children received toys for Christmas
2,146 toys were distributed

Major Andrew Miller invited attendees to visit the family store and offices at 302 Broadway, adding that “soon, by December 1, I hope, we will move our location to the Steamboat Bend Shopping Center.”

Before dinner was served, the people were entertained by the Salvation Army Brass Band.

During dinner, Praise Song from HLGU presented three songs, led by the university’s creative director, John Francis, and performance director, Jeremiah Craighead.
