We just wanted to share from the blessings we have been experiencing here in the Quincy/Hannibal region. What a joy it is to now begin to develop partnerships and watch our vision grow as to the impact we can make over the course of a child’s life with the Kroc Center at the center of it all. In creating places and spaces for youth development, we are seeing the dream unfold before us. My dream is to watch us create the framework for lifelong impact as we walk with children and their families through the transitions of their development. This framework has just begun to solidify as we have identified one of our new partners in our neighborhood.

As part of our plan to build relationships in our community we have officially adopted our first school. Berrian Elementary School is located about a mile from the Kroc Center, and 91% of the children attending qualify for free lunch.Understanding what that translates to for income guidelines you can understand our desire to reach out to these neighborhood families with inspiration and hope for a future beyond their circumstances.

As an introduction to our Kroc Community (now growing to 3000 members) we held a Christmas Party for the school at our center. With the model proposed by Major Dan we took the adopt-a-school concept and ran with it. Last week, Lt. Linnea took four Dollar Store gifts to the school and allowed each of the 235 children to select a gift for their mother and father, or guardians as they may be. With the selections made we moved quickly to take deliver of the gifts returning with a hand full of staff and alongside the teachers helped each child wrap the gifts for their parents. Last night the school staff arrived at our Worship Theater with the gifts set, and then the families began to come.

And come, and come they did. While we sent a bus to assist with transportation needs, we only needed to pick up 18 individuals. As we filled our Worship Theater, the overflow began to quickly fill the balcony as well. When all was said and done we had 583 in our worship theater. We had a few introductions of our officer staff and their School staff, then turned to the children to sing Christmas songs and to share a bit of poetry. I then shared a short message about the Joy of Giving.

Using the Kroc Gift as our example of joyful giving, we transitioned to the joy of giving by the children to each of the parents present. I expressed our gratitude for such a gift to our community and invited them to join us in enjoying all that this Community Center has to offer them and their children. We shared our desire to partner with them to provide an environment for youth development and an incredible future for our children. Major Dan Jennings then shared the Quincy Kroc vision of Inspiration, Instruction and Involvement and the invitation to visit us on Sundays for church.

From there we moved to the Meadows, where Christmas melodies filled the air as brilliant visuals danced on the overhead screens. The simplicity of cookies and juice allowed for conversations to linger into the next hour as this strange new building began to become a warm inviting space for the families and school staff present. This was the first of our open door activities with Berrian School. We look forward to many more updates as we continue to build on the foundation now begun.

- Lt. Rich Forney

The Salvation Army Toy Town is once again rolling through the Quincy and Hannibal area this holiday season.

Tuesday, KHQA, Refreshment Services Pepsi, and The Salvation Army celebrated the campaign with a kick-off celebration.

In an effort to help give some Christmas joy to less fortunate families, the Quincy Salvation Army has placed drop-off boxes around town for the public to place their toy donations. KHQA is glad to both sponsor and be a drop-off location this year.

Quincy’s Salvation Army Major Dan Jennings encourages you to help fill our Toy Town trailer which was donated to the cause by Gully Transportation. You can bring your donations to KHQA’s main lobby during regular business hours, at 301 S. 36th Street.

New and clean, gently-used toys may also be dropped off at The Kroc Center in Quincy.

Toy Town has become one of the larger Christmas campaigns in the area since the Tri-States lost the Marine Toys for Tots Program.

Other area toy drop off locations near you:

- Quincy Mall (including near Sears, JC Penney’s and BonWorth)
- Big Lots (Quincy and Hannibal)
- Walgreens (Quincy and Hannibal)
- CVS (Quincy)
- Walmart (Quincy)
- Broadway Vision Center (Quincy)

You may also consider donating to the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. It’s not about toys for Christmas, but items many area children need and would otherwise go without.

Angel Trees are located in several areas including The Kroc Center and Walmart in Quincy.

You can take an ornament with a wish list from Angel Trees across the Tri-States. In the past, they’ve made it available for children as old as 12. This year, you can help children as old as 14.

This year, Angel Trees in Quincy and Hannibal will benefit the Toy Town program.

On Monday May 16th, at the Quincy Salvation Army, Charlie Doan was presented with The Salvation Army’s Central Territory Lifetime Volunteer Award.

This award is only given to an outstanding volunteer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in providing service to others through The Salvation Army over many years.

The Quincy Salvation Army Kroc Center was privileged to recognize Advisory Board Member, Charlie Doan, as the recipient of the Territorial Lifetime Service Award. A reception was held in his honor on May 16th. Divisional Headquarters guests, Major Barbara MacClean, Divisional Secretary for Program, and Sheila R. Davis, Divisional Volunteer Coordinator were on hand to present Charlie with the Award.

Charlie has given 40+ years of volunteer service to The Salvation Army in Quincy. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.” Charlie has always been an ambitious man, who for many years, has supported and given generously to The Salvation Army. He is also involved with many community organizations and groups that have affected many lives for the better. In addition to his 40+ years as a Salvation Army advisory board member, he also has life member status.

Charlie has served The Salvation Army in many ways over the years. He served for many years on the Emergency Disaster Team, helping with disasters both locally and nationally. Throughout the holiday season he has manned kettles and served as the coordinator and head cook for The Salvation Army’s Community Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners. His many years of faithful service to The Salvation Army are respected and will continue to be appreciated. Even at the age of 86, Charlie continues to be active, and is the current chair of the Advisory Board Property Committee.

Charlie’s spirit of volunteerism is being carried on by his family, with three generations of Doans currently volunteering for The Salvation Army.

To receive instruction means to become informed or taught. Many will receive something far more than they had expected as the Kroc Center opportunities will be many.

Who we receive our instruction from is just as important. There are many things in the world that would instruct us in the wrong way. But the Bible says in Psalm 94, “Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O Lord, and teach out of Your law.”

Come and join us in learning something new at the Kroc Center! Our inspiration for the instruction we give comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.
